PIONEER SQUARE DISTRICT

Pioneer Square’s historic district of Seattle offers a wealth of art galleries, book

stores, antique shops, and cool restaurants, within easy walking (or free bus) distance of most downtown Seattle hotels.

The cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages are a reminder of life a century ago.

Every first Thursday of the month there is a free tour of the art galleries held in the early evening.

First Thursday Art Walk – Pioneer Square/downtown area, Seattle, WA.

6-8pm on the first thursday of every month.

Over 35 art venues including galleries, museums, restaurants, bars and shops.

Also, don’t miss the West Edge neighborhood, the heart of the Museum Arts District where five of the Northwest’s longest running galleries operate and are open on First Thursday’s.

If you visit SAM don’t miss these galleries, all within one block of the Seattle Art Museum. All five galleries support our local artist’s community by representing local as well as notionally recognized artists.

The light rail’s 3rd stop in the metro tunnel will drop you off at the West Edge, heart of Seattle’s arts and entertainment district plus, it’s completely within Metro’s ride free zone.

So leave your car at home and enjoy Seattle’s favorite neighborhood while riding free and green, West Edge!

UPDATE: A new website has launched for the First Thursday Art Walk called www.firstthursdayseattle.com. It includes information and maps on venues, restaurants and parking.

WASHINGTON SHOE BUILDING

Washington Shoe Building, 400 Occidental Way South in the Pioneer Square neighborhood, Seattle, Washington, USA. Also known as J. M. Frink Building / Washington Iron Works / Washington Shoe Mfg. Company Building / Washington Shoe Company Building / “The Shoe”.

Visible signs from former tenants say “Dago Durneden Co. Mfgrs. Green Hood Shirts”, “The Washington Shoe Mfg. Co.” On the corner is a Starbucks. To its right is Ebbets Field Flannels, which manufactures and retails replicas of old professional baseball uniforms.

Built 1892, remodeled many times (including two storeys added in 1912, and some art deco detailing later). Many manufacturing and warehouse uses, then for many years this was a warren of small artist studios
